I worked in a contract role for over 30 months. Long enough, for someone who has never worked in a contract, maybe yes, but for someone who has worked in a contract for over 120 months, maybe not.
Despite being in contract only a few months, I decided to share a few things that might be helpful if you are trying to change from a Permanent to a contract role.
Transitioning from permanent roles to contract roles can seem risky, but it’s also a great opportunity to take on new challenges and work with diverse teams. However, there are key considerations to keep in mind before making the switch.
1. Understand Your Financial Situation
Track your expenses for at least 6-12 months (ideally 24 months) to understand your spending habits.
Build a savings buffer that makes you comfortable—whether it’s 3, 6, or 12 months of expenses. Personally, I aimed for at least 6 months.
2. Seek Advice from Contractors
Talk to people already in contract roles to understand the pros, cons, and rates.
Their firsthand experience can provide invaluable insights.
3. Start with a 6-Month Contract
Begin with a 6-month contract to give yourself a solid runway.
Discuss extension possibilities with your recruiter upfront.
4. Create a 90-Day Plan
Develop a 90-day plan to set yourself up for success in the new role.
Focus on understanding how you can support your team and manager.
5. Build Trust and Deliver Results
As an outsider, you bring fresh perspectives, but avoid suggesting changes too early.
Focus on excelling at assigned tasks to build trust and credibility.
6. Identify Opportunities for Improvement
Log potential improvements from the start and present them incrementally.
This approach can lead to extensions and further opportunities.
7. Address Personal and Professional Concerns
Consider how the transition impacts your finances, family, and long-term goals.
Discuss these concerns openly with your support system.
8. Overcome Initial Challenges
Questions about team support, community, and perceptions from your previous employer are common.
In my case, these concerns were resolved positively, and my former colleagues were supportive of my decision.
Contracting offers unique opportunities for growth and flexibility. If you’re considering this path, take the time to plan, seek advice, and approach the transition with confidence. Feel free to reach out if you have questions—I’m happy to help!
